Where to Stay

Hotels in São Tomé
The Honest Guide

Accommodation in Sao Tome ranges from a full-service seafront resort to small family-run guesthouses. This guide covers the main options across every budget, with honest notes on location, facilities and what guests consistently say.

A note on taxis

Taxis in Sao Tome do not use meters. Drivers at the bigger hotels often quote prices in euros — sometimes significantly above the local rate. The going rate for a city-centre journey in dobras is generally 20 to 30 dobras. Ask staff at your hotel for the correct local fare before you get in. Better still, hire a car for the week — it is cheaper than you might expect and makes getting around considerably easier.

Insider tip

If you would rather not deal with taxis at all, we can arrange an airport transfer for you — sometimes it is just nicer to have someone waiting. We also hire cars if you want to get out and explore the island at your own pace.

If you feel like walking into the city rather than taking a taxi, there is a shortcut worth knowing about. Head towards the city and take the track that turns left next to the closed car dealership — it runs along the ocean through a local community. At sunset it is one of the nicer walks on the island. Take a torch if you are coming back after dark, and expect crabs on the path. Jellyfish often pack in tight along this stretch, and catch it right and you will see dolphins — sometimes wall to wall.

Club Santana Beach and Resort

Beach Resort

Santana village, 30 minutes south of city

Club Santana is a beach resort in Santana village, roughly 30 minutes south of Sao Tome city. It rates 8.5 out of 10 on Booking.com.

The resort has 31 bungalows with private terraces, a sea-facing pool, jacuzzi, private sandy beach, bar, poolside restaurant, spa, sauna and massage room. Free water sports are included for guests: kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and a baby catamaran. Snorkelling trips to Santana islet by boat are also complimentary. A PADI dive centre operates on site. All bungalows have air conditioning, flat-screen TV, minibar, safe and tea and coffee-making facilities. Free WiFi and free parking are included.

The free water activities and private beach are consistently praised. Food and staff get positive reviews.

Worth knowing

Worth knowing before you book: Club Santana charges an entrance fee — the beach and facilities are not accessible to non-guests without paying at the gate. On our last visit the security guard was, let's say, not the warmest welcome to the island. The resort is beautiful but it has a controlled, sterile feel that keeps it at arm's length from real Santomean life. It is also 30 minutes from the city. If you want a self-contained beach stay and the water sports appeal, it delivers. If you want to feel like you are actually in Sao Tome, look elsewhere.

Eco-Lodge

Mucumbli Ecolodge

Eco-Lodge

North-west coast, near Neves

Mucumbli is an eco-lodge on the north-west coast of the island, near Neves. It is rated number one specialty lodging in Neves on TripAdvisor with 241 reviews.

The lodge is owned and run by Italian couple Tiziano and Mari Pisoni, who have lived on the island for over 20 years. It was originally built as a place for family and friends and has grown into what it is today. The operation focuses on creating employment in the Lemba district — one of the least economically developed parts of the island.

Wooden chalets are built with local materials, all with private en-suite bathrooms and spacious verandas facing the ocean. Rooms have ceiling fans rather than air conditioning. WiFi is available in the restaurant area. The restaurant serves a fusion of Italian and Santomean cooking using home-grown produce. Breakfast and dinner are available. The fish of the day and the chocolate cake are mentioned repeatedly by guests.

A short walk from the lodge leads down to a beach of dark volcanic sand — bring water shoes as the path is steep and the shoreline is rocky. Turtles nest on the beach between November and March. Humpback whales and dolphins can be seen offshore between July and October. A full programme of activities can be organised through the lodge: trekking to Lagoa Amelia, Pico de Sao Tome and Caminho do Fugido, bird watching, cycling, roca tours, whale watching and dolphin watching. Bike hire and car hire are available.

Mucumbli is not a city hotel and not a beach resort. It is a place to slow down, eat well and explore the island properly. Guests consistently describe it as one of the best stays in Sao Tome and Principe.

The lodge sits on a cliff with sea views from the rooms and outdoor seating areas. Rooms have a private bathroom, balcony with garden or sea view, desk and coffee-making facilities. A restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner — the grilled octopus is mentioned repeatedly by guests. Free parking is included. Staff speak English and Portuguese. Electricity runs from 18:30 to 22:00 only. There is no hot water. WiFi is available in the restaurant area only.

Reviewers consistently praise the location, the views, the food and the staff. The remoteness and basic facilities are part of the appeal for most guests who make the journey. Several note the lodge is being updated and improved.

Gombela is worth considering if you are spending time in the south and want somewhere to base yourself near the island's best beaches, the Equator landmark and Ilheu das Rolas.
