About Pantufo
Pantufo is a coastal town in the Água Grande District of São Tomé Island, a few kilometres from the capital, São Tomé city. With around 1,800 residents, it is one of the few urban settlements on the island outside the capital itself, and has long been a working fishing community.
The town is known for its brightly painted wooden fishing boats drawn up along the beach, its old colonial-era church, and houses with traditional verandas facing the sea. Life here still runs on the rhythm of the fishing day: boats going out at dawn, nets mended on the sand, and the catch sold along the shore. Visitors passing through on day trips from the capital often stop to see the boats and the church before continuing down the coast.
Staying in Pantufo means being close enough to São Tomé city for easy day trips, while based in a quieter, more local stretch of coast.
