You can download São Tomé offline on Google Maps over Wi-Fi, but the app's standard driving estimates are notoriously optimistic: it routinely quotes 1 hour for roads that actually take 2.5 hours due to potholes and curves. Questions about driving São Tomé

What are the road conditions like in São Tomé?

Main coastal roads running south to São João dos Angolares and north to Neves are asphalted. Beyond these points, roads transition into narrow tracks featuring potholes, unpaved gravel and river stones. Coastal access tracks to lodges like Tortue Ecolodge and Praia Vanha require a capable 4x4 with high ground clearance, especially during the rainy season. All our circuits include a rugged 4x4 built for these exact conditions.

How do drive times compare to map distances?

Never calculate travel times by mileage. The 75 kilometre drive south takes 2.5 to 3 hours because the asphalt narrows past São João dos Angolares into winding coastal curves. Driving speeds average 35 to 45 km/h. We strongly advise against driving after dark due to unlit roads, pedestrians and livestock.

What driving licence do I need?

Domestic driving licences issued by the UK, European Union, United States, Canada and Australia are legally recognised in São Tomé and Príncipe. You do not require an International Driving Permit for visits under 30 days.

What currency should I carry for daily expenses?

Credit cards are not accepted outside major hotels in the capital. Carry cash in euros. While the official bank peg is 24.50 STN to €1, the open street market in downtown São Tomé along Rua de Angola exchanges €1 for 26 STN, and 27 STN for clean €100 banknotes. Bring clean, undamaged €50 and €100 notes to cover meals and daily expenses.
