Flights to São Tomé

Airlines, routes, and what to expect when you arrive.

São Tomé and Príncipe is not the most straightforward destination to reach, but the journey is becoming easier. Most visitors connect through Lisbon or Luanda, and flight times from Europe are manageable.

Main Airlines and Routes

TAP Air Portugal operates the main scheduled services between Lisbon and São Tomé. This is the best route from Europe: reliable, reasonably frequent, and the most straightforward connection for travellers from the UK, France, or elsewhere on the continent. Return fares typically run between €550 and €750. Lisbon is around seven hours from São Tomé.

STP Airways also operates on the Lisbon route. It is worth checking both TAP and STP for availability and price, as schedules and frequencies vary.

TAAG Angola Airlines connects Luanda with São Tomé. Return fares via Luanda are commonly 30 to 40 percent cheaper than the TAP route. The flight from Luanda takes around ninety minutes, making this a strong option for anyone already in sub-Saharan Africa or willing to connect via Angola.

ASKY Airlines flies via Lomé in Togo, partnered with Ethiopian Airlines. This opens a route from the US (Newark, Dulles) or East Africa to São Tomé without touching Europe.

Booking and Connections

From the UK, fly to Lisbon with TAP or British Airways to Accra and connect onward. Total journey time from London is typically ten to fourteen hours depending on layover. TAP also flies direct from Accra, though the BA/Accra connection has a schedule mismatch, so check carefully before booking that route.

From the US, routing via Lisbon is most common. Expect total journey times of sixteen to twenty hours from the east coast. The ASKY/Lomé route is an alternative worth checking.

Book early. São Tomé is a small destination and seats fill up, particularly during the dry season peak from July to September. Book direct with the airline where possible: third-party sites do not always reflect current availability on these routes.

Arriving at São Tomé International Airport

São Tomé International is small and the process is usually straightforward, though it can feel chaotic during busy arrivals. There is a €20 entry fee on arrival, payable in cash only, so bring a clean, crisp note, as torn or marked ones are often refused. You will also need the name and address of where you are staying. A yellow fever certificate is checked if you are arriving from or transiting a country where the disease is present, so keep it with you.

The airport is about ten minutes by taxi from the city centre, with taxis waiting outside the terminal. Agree the fare before you get in and don't pay more than €10 to your hotel, or arrange a pickup through your accommodation or message us on WhatsApp before you land.

Currency exchange is available at the airport but the rates are poor, so bring euros or US dollars and change money in the city instead. If you arrive with no cash at all, the airport can arrange a taxi into the city on a pay-later basis, but it works out expensive, and you'll have to settle the bill before you're allowed to board your flight home.

Baggage and Practicalities

Baggage allowances on São Tomé routes can be strict. Check with your carrier before packing. STP Airways allowances have varied over time, and overweight fees at check-in are not cheap.

Book direct where possible. Third-party booking sites do not always reflect current availability on São Tomé routes, and customer service is easier when dealing directly with the airline.
