The top-tier property on either island and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Sundy Praia sits on the northwest coast where mature forest runs down to the sand. The wider Roça Sundy estate is historically significant: the 1919 solar eclipse observations that confirmed Einstein's theory of relativity took place here. Arrival involves a thirty-minute 4x4 transfer along unpaved roads, signalling its remote setting.

Fifteen tented villas set among almond and banana trees, raised on screw pile foundations so the forest floor stays largely intact. Inside, they feel more like small houses than tents: indoor and outdoor living spaces, four-poster beds with nets, stone baths facing the forest, and private plunge pools in selected villas. Units are spaced to reduce noise and light spill.

The main communal space is OKA Sundy, a tall bamboo and thatch structure that acts as restaurant and informal hub. Produce comes from the Paciência organic garden and trusted local growers, and cacao from Roça Sundy appears in savoury dishes and desserts. Infinity pool above the beach and a small spa using coconut oil, cacao, coffee, and medicinal plants. Treatments follow what the island produces rather than imported templates.

Activities are low impact and interpretation led: forest walks, biosphere drives, cacao tours, community visits, and seasonal whale and turtle observation.

The original HBD property on Príncipe, reopened after full renovation. Sits on the northern tip of the island. A timber walkway leads out to a small islet with two beaches on either side, and the lodge remains low and unobtrusive within the landscape.

Eighteen thatched bungalows in garden plots near the water. Air conditioning, en suite bathrooms, small outdoor sitting areas. The luxury here lies in space, salt air, and quiet rather than design statements.

Meals take place on the islet, reached by the bridge. Walking it at night, with the Atlantic below and lanterns lighting the path, is part of the Bom Bom rhythm. Kitchen uses fruit, vegetables, and herbs grown on the property or at nearby roças. Straightforward cooking shaped by supply and season.

Since 2021, HBD has stopped offering catch and release, deep sea, and sport fishing. Humpback whales pass offshore from July to October, sea turtles nest in the wider marine protected area. Guests join controlled observation trips. Flatter terrain and shorter walks than Sundy Praia. Around 15 minutes from airport via paved and forest track.

Thirty rooms and suites in pastel blue and turquoise stone buildings arranged in a horseshoe around a palm-fringed swimming pool, facing Lagarto Beach. Five minutes from the airport, close to the city centre and the Cloçon Téla chocolate factory.

Rooms feature exposed brick walls, rattan lampshades, comfortable beds, and desks. The restaurant is well known locally: modern fusion dishes with a menu strong on fresh seafood. Pool, outdoor tennis court, tropical gardens. Works equally well for leisure travellers and business visitors.

The largest hotel on the islands. 115 rooms, five-star rated, beachfront on Avenida Marginal. Pool, gym, casino, conference centre with five meeting rooms, restaurant with ocean views, bar, room service, 24-hour front desk, business centre, private beach area with snorkelling and kayaking. Full resort amenities that the boutique properties across the islands do not match.

The smaller Pestana property, 65 rooms on the same waterfront avenue. Good breakfast, helpful staff, convenient location close to São Tomé town centre.

Rustic wooden chalets on a beach on the east coast of São Tomé. Pool, restaurant, direct beach access. More relaxed and informal than the city hotels. Rated 8.9.

Five wooden chalets on a clifftop near Neves overlooking the Atlantic. Italian-owned by Tiziano and Mari who have lived on the island for over twenty years. The restaurant serves what many visitors describe as the best food on São Tomé: fresh seafood, local vegetables, homemade jams and yoghurt, all sourced from their own farm or nearby. Ceiling fans and ocean breeze. Steep path down to a private volcanic black sand beach.

Turtles nest on the shoreline November to March. Whale watching trips nearby July to October. Closest base for Pico de São Tomé and Ôbo National Park from the north. Rated 9.1.

Príncipe is significantly more expensive than São Tomé, and reaching it requires a domestic flight with strict luggage limits. Power follows European standards at 220 volts. Wi-Fi is available at all properties but works at island speed.

Carrying a small reserve of cash is sensible as card payments can be slow when connectivity dips. Whale season runs July to October. Turtle nesting occurs November to March. Accommodation stock across both islands is small, so booking ahead is a practical necessity.
