The Lodge

Tortue sits where the road runs out on the south-east coast, in a grove of coconut palms behind a beach of dark volcanic sand. There is no pool, no lobby and no bar menu. There are three houses, a garden, the sea, and a stretch of sand where sea turtles come ashore to lay.

The houses are built of local timber and raised on stilts, each with its own covered veranda and a fan instead of air conditioning. The lodge runs on solar power and stays connected through Starlink, which is a rare combination this far from the capital: enough comfort to work or send photos, and still nothing between you and the sound of the surf.

We use Tortue as the beach base on our self-drive circuits, and we can book it for you on its own. Tell us the dates and which house you like the look of, and we will check availability with the lodge directly.

The Three Houses

All three share the same beach and garden. The difference is position, size and how much shade you get in the afternoon.

Casa do Mar

The one closest to the waterHouse 1 of 3

Casa do Mar stands on stilts above the grass, a short walk from the sand, with a covered veranda facing the ocean. The house is built from local timber, with a fan in the room instead of air conditioning and the trade winds doing most of the work.

A surfboard hangs under the house and the name is painted on a slab of wood at the gate. It is the house most people picture when they think of sleeping on a turtle beach.

Casa Africa

Casa Africa is the largest of the three, with polished timber floors, a high ceiling and windows on two sides so the room stays cool through the afternoon. The bed sits under a ceiling fan, with printed cloth and a carved mask or two on the walls.

Outside, a stone path with a timber handrail runs between the palms and the garden beds, down to the sand. It is a two minute walk from the door to the water.

Casa da Praia

Beach house, steps from the sandHouse 3 of 3

Casa da Praia looks straight at the beach. The house stands on stilts over the sand, with a wooden deck in front holding two loungers and a low table, and nothing between you and the sound of the sea.

Inside it is simple and quiet: timber walls, a fan, a desk by the window and enough space to spread out after a long drive down the coast.

Turtles on the Sand

Praia Jalé is one of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches in the Gulf of Guinea. Four species use it: olive ridley, green, leatherback and hawksbill. Females come ashore at night to dig and lay, and hatchlings break out of the sand weeks later and run for the water.

Nesting runs through the year, with the busiest months between November and March. If you are here in season, the local conservation team may be able to take you out with them at night. Go quietly, keep torches off unless you are asked to use one, and never touch a turtle or a nest.

The beach is not a manicured resort shoreline. It is dark sand, driftwood and palm shade, and the water can be rough. That is the trade for being somewhere turtles still choose.

Getting There

Praia Jalé is on the far south-east coast. The drive from São Tomé city follows the south coast road through São João dos Angolares and on to Porto Alegre, then turns for the beach. The final stretch is an earth track, so a 4x4 with ground clearance is the sensible choice, and in the rainy season it is essential.

We can include a 4x4 with comprehensive insurance on any stay here, or build the lodge into a longer circuit with the south coast beaches and the vanilla estate at Praia Vanha.
