What to Pack for São Tomé and Príncipe
Practical packing advice from someone who lives on the island.
Packing for São Tomé and Príncipe is mostly about heat, humidity, rain, rough surfaces and simple practical problems. You do not need expedition gear for a normal trip, but you should not pack as if you are going to a polished beach resort either.
The islands are tropical, humid and green. The coast is hot, the interior can be cooler and wetter, and rain can appear even outside the main rainy months. Good shoes, light clothes, insect protection, basic medicines and enough cash matter more than smart outfits.
This guide is written for ordinary travellers visiting São Tomé, Príncipe, beaches, roças, waterfalls, forest walks and small towns.
Pack for heat, humidity and rain
São Tomé and Príncipe is warm and humid throughout the year. Light clothing is useful, but it should not all be beach clothing. You will probably want clothes that dry quickly, cover your skin when needed, and still feel comfortable after a hot day outside.
Bring clothes that can cope with sweat, rain and dust. In the wetter months, paths can become muddy. In the drier months, the islands are still humid, and showers can still pass through.
A lightweight rain jacket or poncho is worth packing, especially if you are walking, visiting waterfalls or travelling by road in unsettled weather.
Clothes to pack for São Tomé and Príncipe
Pack light, breathable clothes for daytime. T-shirts, loose shirts, shorts, light trousers and simple dresses are all useful. Clothes that dry quickly are better than thick cotton if you are moving around a lot.
For evenings, bring at least one long-sleeved shirt and long trousers or a long skirt. These help with mosquitoes and are also more practical if you are eating out, travelling through villages or staying somewhere cooler in the hills.
You do not need to dress formally for most travel in São Tomé and Príncipe. Simple, clean and comfortable is enough.
A basic packing list for São Tomé and Príncipe could include:
- Light shirts or T-shirts
- Shorts
- Light trousers or skirts
- Swimwear
- Long-sleeved shirt
- Underwear and socks
- Sleepwear
- One warmer layer for cooler hill areas
- A hat or cap for sun protection
What shoes to bring to São Tomé and Príncipe
Shoes matter more than most visitors expect. São Tomé and Príncipe has beaches, towns, forest paths, muddy tracks, slippery rocks and uneven roads. Flip-flops are fine for the beach or accommodation, but they are not enough for the whole trip.
Bring comfortable walking shoes or trail shoes if you plan to visit waterfalls, roças, forest areas or viewpoints. You do not need heavy mountain boots for normal sightseeing, but shoes should have grip and be able to get dirty.
Sandals are useful for beach days and short walks, but avoid relying only on open footwear if you plan to explore properly.
If you are bringing walking or hiking boots, pack a spare set of boot laces. They are not something you will find easily on the island, and a snapped lace mid-trip is a genuinely annoying problem with no quick fix locally.
Packing for rain, rivers and forest walks
If you are visiting waterfalls, forest trails or interior areas, pack for damp conditions. The forest can be wet even when the coast feels dry. Paths may be muddy, rocks can be slippery, and river areas can be wet underfoot.
Useful items include:
- Shoes with grip
- Lightweight rain jacket or poncho
- A small dry bag or waterproof pouch
- Spare socks
- Clothes that dry quickly
- A small towel
Do not pack only white clothes or delicate shoes. They will not stay clean for long.
Beach and swimming gear for São Tomé
Bring swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen and simple beach clothes. Some accommodation may provide towels, but it is still useful to have a quick-dry travel towel if you plan to visit beaches, waterfalls or boat-access areas.
A rash vest or light swim shirt can be useful for sun protection, especially if you burn easily. Some beaches are remote, so bring water and basic supplies rather than assuming there will be shops nearby.
Not every beach is suitable for swimming every day. Sea conditions vary, and some places can have strong waves, rocks or currents. Ask locally before swimming, especially on quiet or remote beaches.
Insects and health items
Bring insect repellent and use it, especially in the evening. Long sleeves and long trousers are also useful after dark. São Tomé and Príncipe is a tropical destination, and travellers should check official travel health advice before departure, especially for vaccines, malaria prevention and any personal medical needs. Outside the capital, access to medicines and pharmacies is very limited, so bring everything you know you need.
A small personal medical kit is sensible. Include any regular medication, plus basic items you already know you can use safely.
Useful items may include:
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen
- After-sun or moisturiser
- Plasters
- Antiseptic wipes
- Pain relief
- Anti-diarrhoea medicine
- Rehydration salts
- Personal prescription medicine
- Any travel medicine advised by a health professional
Personal hygiene and toiletries
Basic toiletries are available in the capital but choice is limited and stock can be inconsistent. Bring enough of anything you rely on for the full trip rather than planning to restock locally.
Tampons are rarely available outside a small number of stores in São Tomé city. Supermercado CKdo sometimes stocks them, but it is not something to rely on. Bring a full supply from home.
Condoms are available in pharmacies and some supermarkets in the capital and are generally reliable, though the range of brands and types is limited.
Cash, cards and documents for São Tomé and Príncipe
Bring enough cash for your trip, especially if you are travelling outside the main town or using small local services. Cards are not something to rely on everywhere. Small businesses, drivers, guides, shops and local restaurants may expect cash.
Keep your passport, insurance details, flight information and accommodation details somewhere safe. It is also useful to keep offline copies on your phone in case the internet is weak.
Bring:
- Passport
- Travel insurance details
- Flight details
- Accommodation details
- Driving licence if hiring a car
- Emergency contact details
- Cash in suitable condition
- Copies of key documents
Avoid carrying all your cash and documents in one place. Keep valuables secure and do not take unnecessary valuables to the beach.
Electronics and practical items
Bring a phone, charger, power bank and plug adapter. São Tomé and Príncipe uses European-style plug types C and F, and the electricity supply is 220 to 230 volts at 50 Hz. Travellers from the UK, US and some other countries will need an adapter.
A power bank is useful if you are out all day, travelling by road, taking local flights between the islands or using your phone for maps, photos and translation. Download important information before travelling, including maps, booking details and contact numbers.
Useful items include:
- Phone and charger
- Plug adapter for São Tomé
- Power bank
- Head torch or small flashlight
- Waterproof phone pouch or dry bag
- Offline maps downloaded before arrival
- Translation app
- Reusable water bottle
- Sunglasses
A small torch is worth packing because lighting can be limited outside town, especially during power cuts.
What not to overpack
Do not overpack formal clothes, heavy shoes, expensive jewellery or unnecessary electronics. São Tomé and Príncipe is relaxed, humid and practical. Too much luggage becomes a problem if you are moving between places, taking local flights between São Tomé and Príncipe island, or using smaller vehicles on rougher roads.
Avoid bringing things you would be worried about losing, damaging or getting wet. The trip will be easier if your luggage is simple and practical.
Clothes can be reused, washed and dried, although drying takes longer in humid weather.
If you want to travel light for a day trip, an inter-island flight or a stretch of the trip where heavy bags would slow you down, secure luggage storage is available directly with us. Get in touch before your trip to arrange it.
Final packing advice for São Tomé and Príncipe
The best packing approach is simple: light clothes, proper shoes, a rain jacket, insect repellent, basic medicine, cash, documents and a few practical electronics.
Pack for a place that is beautiful, humid, green and sometimes inconvenient. If you are ready for rain, mud, heat, mosquitoes, slow roads and quiet beaches without many facilities, the islands are much easier to enjoy.
Do not pack for perfection. Pack for real travel.
