Curated by Jack Fitzgerald · Resident Founder, The Chocolate Islands

“We live here and drive these exact tracks every week. Arriving late off long international flights should never be followed by navigating rutted rural tracks in the dark, and your departure day should not involve a three hour emergency drive from the deep south. This route bookends your trip in town, so you get daylight driving, verified 4x4 traction and direct local support.”

Three bases, one island

Each base is a separate property with its own room arrangements for two and for three guests. The order is fixed: town on night 1, the east coast for three nights, the deep south for two, then back to town for your final night before the flight.

Day 5

South beneath Pico Cão Grande

Leave Tortue after breakfast and drive south as the road narrows past fishing villages and beneath the 663 metre volcanic needle of Pico Cão Grande, all in daylight. Check into your beach bungalow at Delícias das Ilhas on Praia Vanha and settle into leve-leve.

Practical self-drive realities

Driving conditions and speed

Never calculate travel time from map distance. The 75 kilometre drive south takes two and a half to three hours, because the asphalt narrows past São João dos Angolares into winding coastal curves. Average speed is 35 to 45 km/h. We advise against driving after dark: roads are unlit and pedestrians and livestock use them.

Driving licences

Standard national licences from the UK, the EU, the US, Canada and Australia are legally valid. You do not need an International Driving Permit for visits under 30 days.

Cash and currency

Cards are not accepted outside the big hotels in the capital. Carry euros in cash: the official bank rate is 24.50 STN to €1, while the street market on Rua de Angola pays around 26 STN, and 27 STN for clean €100 notes. Bring clean, undamaged €50 and €100 notes.

Questions people ask before booking

Why does this route bookend in São Tomé town?

Flights often touch down after sunset. Instead of navigating unfamiliar rural dirt tracks in the dark, you get an included airport transfer to Bigasso Guest House and take vehicle handover in broad daylight the next morning. Returning to town on your final night avoids a three hour drive from the south on departure day.

How are rooms arranged for three guests?

Three guests get the one bedroom apartment at Bigasso Guest House, Casa do Mar with a double and a bunk bed (or Casa da Praia with an extra bed) at Tortue Ecolodge, and a triple arrangement at Delícias das Ilhas.

What driving licence do I need to hire a 4x4 in São Tomé?

Standard national licences from the UK, the EU, the US, Canada and Australia are legally recognised for visits under 30 days. No International Driving Permit is required.

What currency should I bring for this road trip?

Bring euros in cash. The official rate is 24.50 STN to €1, while street exchange in downtown São Tomé pays around 26 STN per euro and 27 STN for clean €100 notes. Cards are not accepted along the southern coast roads.
