“This route connects the island's two main coastal regions outside the capital. You start with a night in town to avoid late-night driving after flights, head down to the southern beaches beneath Pico Cão Grande, and finish on the north-west coast near Neves. Everything is backed by our own workshop-maintained 4x4s and verified local accommodation.”

Three bases, one island

Each base has its own room arrangement for two and for three guests. The order is fixed: town on night 1, the deep south for two nights, the north-west clifftops for three, then back to town for your final night before the flight.

Practical self-drive realities

Driving conditions and speed

Never calculate travel times by map distance. The drive south to Praia Vanha takes two and a half to three hours because the asphalt narrows past São João dos Angolares into winding coastal curves. Driving speeds average 35 to 45 km/h. We advise against driving after dark due to unlit roads, pedestrians and livestock.

Driving licences

Standard national driving licences from the UK, the European Union, the United States, Canada and Australia are legally valid. You do not need an International Driving Permit for visits under 30 days.

Cash and currency

Credit cards are not accepted outside major hotels in the capital. Carry cash in euros. While the official bank peg is 24.50 STN to €1, the open street market in downtown São Tomé along Rua de Angola exchanges €1 for 26 STN, and 27 STN for clean €100 banknotes. Bring clean, undamaged €50 and €100 notes to cover meals and daily expenses.

Questions people ask before booking

Why does this route bookend in São Tomé town?

Flights frequently touch down after sunset. Rather than navigating unfamiliar rural tracks in the dark, you get an included airport transfer to Bigasso Guest House and take vehicle handover in broad daylight the next morning. Returning to town on your final night avoids a long journey on departure day.

How are rooms arranged for 3 guests?

Three guests receive the one bedroom apartment at Bigasso Guest House, triple bungalow arrangements at Delícias das Ilhas, and the Standard Room Triple with breakfast included at Mucumbli Ecolodge.

What driving licence do I need to hire a 4x4 in São Tomé?

Standard national driving licences from the UK, the European Union, the United States, Canada and Australia are legally recognised for visits under 30 days. No International Driving Permit is required.

What currency should I bring for this road trip?

Bring cash in euros. While the official central bank rate is 24.50 STN to €1, street exchange in downtown São Tomé pays 26 STN per euro on standard notes and 27 STN for clean €100 banknotes. Credit cards are not accepted along southern coastal roads.
