Belo Monte stands on a hilltop on Príncipe's northeast coast, with views across the rainforest, beaches and Gulf of Guinea. The estate retains the character of a historic cocoa plantation, with its restored main house, neighbouring accommodation buildings, shaded terraces, courtyards and lawns.
The property has 15 rooms and suites, an outdoor swimming pool, restaurant, bar, library, lounges and private cinema. Belo Monte is one of six historic roças included in São Tomé and Príncipe's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in July 2026. Its history forms part of the island's wider colonial plantation heritage.
The Beach & Surroundings
Banana Beach, or Praia Banana, lies below the hotel and is accessible along a footpath through the vegetation. The crescent-shaped beach is sheltered by forested headlands, although swimming conditions depend on the weather and sea.
Nearby Praia Grande is an important sea turtle nesting site. Nesting generally takes place between November and February, with hatching activity extending into April. Belo Monte provides a base for exploring northern Príncipe, including its plantation landscapes, beaches and forest trails.
Dining
Belo Monte's restaurant serves local fish, vegetables, fruit and seasonal produce, combining traditional Santomean ingredients with contemporary cooking. Breakfast is included in the accommodation rate, together with tea and coffee.
Lunch and dinner are available separately. Menus reflect the availability of ingredients on the island.
The Banana Beach Path
Belo Monte has a footpath leading from the estate down to Banana Beach. The route passes through tropical vegetation, with an uphill walk on the return. Ask the hotel team about the condition of the path and the sea before setting out.
During turtle season, guests can also enquire about conservation-led visits to nearby Praia Grande.
