About This Tour
Northern São Tomé offers a very different side of the island, with fishing villages, old plantation routes, Atlantic viewpoints and some of the easiest coastal stops to reach in a single day. The route combines cocoa history, village life, beaches and sea views, with time to stop and take in places most visitors miss.
The day heads first to the Amílcar Cabral cocoa plantation, where you can see fermentation and drying areas and get a sense of how cocoa still shapes life on the island. From there the route continues through Fernão Dias and Roça Agostinho Neto before opening out into the coastal scenery that defines this part of São Tomé.
Stops at Praia dos Tamarinhos and Lagoa Azul offer a quieter coastal contrast to the plantation sections. Lunch is taken in Neves, one of the island's most well-known fishing towns, before the route continues to the Padrão de Descobrimento and finishes at the Santa Catarina Tunnel.
What to Expect
Amílcar Cabral Cocoa Plantation
Visit fermentation and drying areas still in use, with your guide explaining how cocoa shapes the economy and daily life across the island.
Praia dos Tamarinhos and Lagoa Azul
Two coastal stops on the north coast. Praia dos Tamarinhos is an easy beach stop; Lagoa Azul offers one of the best-known views on the island, with clear blue water, baobab trees and a lighthouse on the headland.
Neves and Lunch
Stop in Neves, one of São Tomé's most active fishing towns, for lunch. Petisqueira Santola is a local option known for fresh spider crab. Lunch is paid locally.
Padrão de Descobrimento and Roça Diogo Vaz
The Padrão marks the point of first Portuguese landing on the island. Roça Diogo Vaz is a large plantation estate with one of the island's best-known chocolate operations.
Santa Catarina Tunnel
The island's only road tunnel is a landmark on this stretch of coast. The route finishes at the end of the road, where a ruined bridge meets the river at a popular local swimming spot.
