The 7-Night São Tomé4x4 Circuit

Duration
8 Days / 7 Nights
Price
€1,590 total for 2 people (€795 per person)

Your Island. Your Adventure. Your Pace.

Discover São Tomé on your own terms, with the freedom of your own 4x4, seven nights in three carefully chosen properties and local support whenever you need it.

From Omali's tropical gardens to the secluded southern coastline of Praia Vanha and the dramatic Atlantic setting of Mucumbli, this circuit introduces you to three very different sides of the island.

We've brought together the accommodation, vehicle and selected experiences to make exploring São Tomé straightforward.

The rest is yours to discover.

Take the scenic road. Stop for coffee at an old plantation. Spend an extra hour on a beach. Follow a recommendation from somebody you meet along the way.

Our day-by-day itinerary gives you ideas and local knowledge, but it isn't a timetable.

There is no tour group to follow and no guide telling you when to leave.

Just São Tomé, your own vehicle and the freedom to explore.

Where you stay

Three Distinctive Stays. One Extraordinary Island.

The accommodation is a central feature of this experience.

Seven nights, three different properties and three contrasting settings, from boutique hotel comfort near the capital to a remote southern hideaway and an ecolodge overlooking the Atlantic.

Omali: Your Island Welcome and Farewell

2 nights | First and final nights | Bed & Breakfast

Part of the HBD Príncipe hotel collection, Omali offers a comfortable and stylish introduction to São Tomé. Set opposite Praia Lagarto, close to the airport, the hotel combines tropical gardens, a swimming pool and welcoming accommodation in a relaxed coastal setting.

Your first evening is an opportunity to settle into island life. Enjoy dinner at the hotel's restaurant, relax with a drink beside the pool, or simply unwind after your flight.

After exploring the island's remote beaches, rainforests and plantations, you return to Omali for a final evening of comfort before your journey home.

With airport transfers included, Omali provides a convenient beginning and end to your adventure.

Delícias das Ilhas: A Hideaway in the Deep South

3 nights | Praia Vanha | Bed & Breakfast

Leave the capital behind and head towards São Tomé's quieter southern coast, where Delícias das Ilhas offers wooden, ocean-facing bungalows surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Here, the attraction is not simply the accommodation. The property is also home to an organic vanilla plantation, where the painstaking process of growing, hand-pollinating and curing vanilla forms part of the experience.

Your host, Bastien, also produces Vim Pema Gin and fruit liqueurs, giving you an opportunity to discover another side of the island's tropical produce.

With three nights here, there is no need to rush. Explore Ilhéu das Rolas, wander along southern beaches, discover the mangroves or simply relax and enjoy the Atlantic views.

This is the slow, secluded side of São Tomé.

Open-air dining area at Mucumbli Ecolodge on the north-west coast of São Tomé

Mucumbli: Clifftop Comfort on the Wild Northwest Coast

2 nights | Near Neves | Bed & Breakfast

Perched above the Atlantic on São Tomé's northwestern coastline, Mucumbli Ecolodge combines a dramatic natural setting with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Surrounded by tropical greenery, the lodge's wooden accommodation offers an escape from the bustle of the capital. Its elevated position makes the Atlantic Ocean an ever-present part of your stay.

Mucumbli is also known for its restaurant, which brings together Italian and Santomean influences and uses produce from the property's own farm.

Spend your days discovering cocoa plantations, fishing villages, volcanic landscapes and the winding coastal road towards Santa Catarina.

Then return to Mucumbli for dinner overlooking the ocean.

Two nights here give you time to enjoy both the lodge and the extraordinary northwest.

Pull in for the tasting menu at Roça São João dos Angolares, or grab grilled fish across the road at Mionga.

Watch these remarkable marine turtles during the nesting season, accompanied by the local conservation team.

Price: €25 per person (€50 for two).

Day 4: Southern Exploration, Vanilla & Vim Pema Gin

Morning:

A slow morning exploring the southern tip at your own pace.

Why don't you...

Keep an eye out as you cross the river bridge at Malanza. If the tide is in and the local canoe guy is sitting by the water, hand him a couple hundred Dobras to paddle you up the quiet mangrove channels for 45 minutes to spot kingfishers and land crabs. If he's not there or the tide's out, just head straight to the beach.

Afternoon:

Back at Praia Vanha, Bastien walks you through the organic vanilla plantation, showing how each flower is hand-pollinated and cured, followed by a tasting of his Vim Pema Gin and fruit liqueurs right by the beach.

Overnight:

Delícias das Ilhas / Praia Vanha (Bed & Breakfast).

Day 5: Into the Central Highlands, Across to Mucumbli

Expedition São Tomé

True Atlantic Frontier. Zero Tour Buses.

This is not a sanitised resort holiday. It is an authentic island overland journey: crossing jagged volcanic highlands, tracking coastal dirt roads down to the equator, and pulling into remote eco-lodges with ocean views that stretch to Antarctica.

The Ultimate Anti-Resort Road Trip

You will cross paths with local fishermen, artisan cocoa growers, and empty coastlines, not tour buses or crowds. When people ask about your travels, you will be recounting stories of navigating red-earth tracks beneath the volcanic spire of Pico Cão Grande and swimming in hidden bays where you are the only souls for miles.

Africa Without the Anxieties

Experience the raw excitement of an equatorial overland adventure with none of the usual friction. São Tomé is celebrated as one of Africa's most tranquil, safe, and stable island nations. No checkpoints, no political tension, just genuine local hospitality and the unhurried island pace of leve-leve.

Take the Wheel or Hire the Chauffeur

Everyone travels differently. If you relish the independence of changing gears and following offline GPX routes through mountain passes, your 4x4 is ready. If you prefer to watch the jungle roll past while someone else manages the potholes, add an English-speaking driver to handle the navigation and introduce you to village life.

Stay Off-Grid in Real Comfort

We skipped the sterile international chain hotels. Your bases are genuine architectural sanctuaries: garden rooms near the capital at Omali, solar-powered eco-chalets on a wild vanilla plantation at Praia Vanha, and cliffside wooden lodges perched over the breakers at Mucumbli.

North American & Overseas Arrivals
