Fresh fish, calulu, roasted breadfruit, fruit you cannot name. Cooked by the family. Eaten together. Ask to help and they will teach you.

Road Conditions
Know the roads before you drive them.
São Tomé has a mix of paved highways and unpaved tracks. The main coastal road north is in good condition. The further south and into the interior you go, the more a 4x4 matters. We will always advise you on the right vehicle for your itinerary.
São Tomé City to North
PavedVehicle: Any vehicle
Good road. Comfortable in any hire car.
City to Praia das Conchas
MixedVehicle: 4x4 recommended
Final stretch unpaved. Passable in dry season in a normal car, but a 4x4 is safer.
City to Praia Jalé (South)
Partly unpavedVehicle: 4x4 required
The last section is rough. Do not attempt in a standard car.
Into Obo / Lagoa Amélia road
Steep and unpavedVehicle: 4x4 required
Steep, narrow, and rutted in places. The Hilux or Land Cruiser is the right choice here.
City to Pico Cão Grande viewpoint
PavedVehicle: 4x4 recommended
The main road south is paved, but conditions deteriorate quickly off it. A 4x4 is the safe choice for the south.
