Nature

Mammals
The lush forests of São Tomé are home to several unique mammal species. Among them, the most iconic are the endemic monkeys, particularly the mona monkey, which is sometimes seen leaping through the trees. Offshore, from July to September, you can also spot majestic humpback whales migrating along the coast, an incredible experience for nature lovers. Dolphins are frequently seen playing in the surf year-round.
Reptiles
São Tomé and Príncipe’s beaches play a critical role in the life cycle of endangered sea turtles. Four species — the Olive Ridley, Green, Hawksbill, and Leatherback — come ashore under the cover of darkness to lay their eggs between November and February. If you’re fortunate, you might catch a glimpse of tiny hatchlings making their first journey to the ocean between mid-February and late March, a sight that leaves lasting memories.
Birds
For bird enthusiasts, São Tomé is a haven with more than 140 recorded species, including many that are endemic to the island. The São Tomé ibis and the giant sunbird are just two examples of the extraordinary avian life found here. The island’s lush forests, mountains, and coastlines make it a paradise for birdwatchers eager to observe rare species in their natural habitat.
